1) Project Description
Las Nubes Daycare and Afterschool Centre provides comprehensive support to the most vulnerable children in the coffee-growing community of Paraxaj, Acatenango.
The Centre offers:
- Nutritious daily meals.
- Educational reinforcement and tutoring.
- Medical supervision and periodic health checkups.
- Safe and nurturing spaces for learning, play, and creative activities.
This program ensures that children have a strong foundation for future education and allows mothers to continue working or studying with the security of knowing their children are cared for.
In this new phase, Las Nubes seeks to consolidate sustainability by combining donor support with local fundraising and coffee-linked initiatives.
2) Project Environment
Acatenango is a rural region with high levels of poverty and dependence on coffee as a seasonal crop. Families often survive on less than USD 2 per day, with limited access to stable employment and education.
Challenges include:
- Malnutrition and food insecurity.
- Limited access to formal work; only seasonal work.
- School dropout rates, especially after primary school.
- Gender inequality, with many mothers unable to work due to childcare responsibilities.
Las Nubes addresses these issues directly by empowering children and mothers, linking education with nutrition, health, and community engagement.
3) Project Objectives
- Improve child development through balanced nutrition, medical attention, and access to quality education.
- Support working mothers by providing a safe and stimulating environment for their children.
- Promote community health via workshops on nutrition, hygiene, preventive medicine, and family planning.
- Encourage sustainability by connecting with the coffee value chain and fundraising initiatives linked to specialty coffee.
4) Expected Outcomes (2025–2026)
- 30 children (ages 3–12) receive nutritious meals and academic support daily.
- Higher educational achievement and reduced school dropout rates.
- 15 mothers supported to work or pursue education.
- Community workshops fostering long-term social and health awareness.
