image Owls One night she met the Devil on a windy mountain road, There was a single star trembling in a lavender sky, And like two melancholy lovers they walked to where the streetlights end And she held him in her arms and he started to cry, He said: “You stole my heart, you just a mortal girl”. She said: “Blind my husband’s eyes and maybe I’ll give you a whirl” And she kissed his eyelids closed And wiped away his tears……. They’d fly like owls at nightfall, over cities and hawthorn lanes, He gave her a withered wreath for her birthday and a strapless dress, And she knew how much he loved her, ‘cos he wrote it in the dust on a star And he asked if she’d be his forever and she told him yes, And in the back bedroom of a madman’s house He lit a fire in her that no god could douse And he made snowflakes fall One stifling summer night ……. Till one day there came a circus, they set up on the outskirts of town, Her lover wooed a trapeze girl with magic and lies That he’d whisper in her ear as tender as summer wind in grass She had no choice but to do what she did and she watched her die, Her lover's gone, he could be anywhere, But there’s a place he goes, and one day she’ll meet him there. She walks the mountain every night Just to watch the twinkling lights …….. [ Back ]
