I found it in my outbox. ----------------------------- Evidence shows there were two adult men in Chicago named "Edward Isadore Olin", which explains why one of them would want to modify their name to distinguish himself from the other. Even tho they were close together in age, they were a generation apart. One was the son of Hassa/Harry and the other was the grandson of Hassa/Harry, ie the son of Louis. Richard, Harry's son, Edward Isadore b. 1895, must be the "E.I." Olin you list on your web site. (See his WW I Draft Registration Card for his exact birth date) Louis' son, Isadore Edward, b.1906 (or Edward Isadore) was younger than his half-uncle (his father's half-brother) with the same exact name and it usually fell to the youngest to modify his name to distinguish himself from the older person with the same name. When two men with the same exact name lived in the same location, they often added a suffix like Jr and Sr to their names - especially if they were family members, even when they were not father and son; or sometimes they distinguished themselves by using the suffix "the elder" and "the younger"; but I suspect Louis' son, who was a successful businessman as an adult, did not want to be known as "Jr" or "the younger", so he chose to modify his name by dropping "Isadore" and adding his father's name "Louis" to become Edward Louis or E.L. No legal name changes were required back then. E. L.'s parents always called him "Isadore" as the census shows and E. I.'s parents also called their son "Isadore". My guess is that neither EL or EI liked the name "Isadore" since both stopped using it as adults. Proof of the above can be found in the documents you have and the two attachments to this email. --------------------- The 1930 census attached: See the household of Marcus RABINS, wife Fannie, mother-in-law Nellie A. OLIN, brother-in-law Edward I. OLIN. In the 1920 census, "Edward I." was called "Isador E.". He and his brother Morris and mother Annie are also living with the same Marcus RABINS and wife Fannie. ---------------------- The World War I draft registration card for "Isador Olin" gave his exact birth date and the following info plus more, shown on the attached copy of the original document signed by Isadore Olin. It is very dim, smeared and difficult to read. Isador Olin Single Birth date: Dec 25, 1895 Place of birth: Gurney, IL (not sure of spelling of town) Occupation: Bookkeeping clerk, Sears Roebuck He claimed an exemption from draft to support his mother. Signature of Isadore Olin (His signature is different from the rest of writing on the page.) Dated: June 7, 1917 ---------------- Hope this helps. Claire
