Those are very important. It would be very hard to discover that "Hassa Olenn" was "Henry Olin" without some clue from somewhere - at least for someone who does not know Russian. Good for Richard! I'm glad others in Larry's family are interested. It is more fun and rewarding when you have family who care. You have my permission to share my name and email with Richard, if you like. I communicate with strangers all the time about genealogy. It's your choice. Richard's docs were very interesting. Funny thing, I've been looking at Harry Olin records since I found Isadore, because there is a younger Harry Olin with a son named Isadore. When one finds a name like "Isadore" in a family, you can bet that he was named for a grandparent, brother, uncle etc. That always interests me and has led me to other family members, altho it is a way to get sidetracked too, because the unusual given name may also be for the female side of the family,ie with a different surname. In those years, many cultures had a tradition of naming the first two sons for their two grandfathers. BTW I also answered my own question - with a little research - as to why the birthplace in Louis death certificate was give as "Poland". Did you know that Vilna was in Russia before WW I, was called Wilmo in Poland between WW I & WW II, then in the Soviet Union after WWII and today is in Lithuania. In the old records, sometimes people use the name at the time the even occurred and other times, they use a later name or even the current name. It makes things interesting for the researcher. I've learned more geography doing genealogy than I ever did in school. I also wondered if Elsie Sacks, age 18 from Chicago, listed below Ida Olin on the New Orleans ship manifest was related to Louis and Ida; I'm sure Larry noticed. I do want to point out inconsistencies in the birthdates given for Louis. Without a birth record, one has to look for dates given by the deceased himself. Women tend to lie about their age as they get older, men don't usually do this. (Yes, women did this in olden times just like today; it is interesting to watch them get younger as they progress thru life in the census records. :-))) Ages given by parents when children are very young are the best indication of their real age. In one write-up about Louis, his birthdate was given as July 28, 1883 and I believe that was the birthdate on his death certificate also. I think it was also the typed date on one ship manifest (New Orleans). But all of these dates were either given by someone else or translated (ie typed) which does create more opportunity for error. We do have one date given by Louis and to which Louis signed his name - that is his WW I registration card. The birthdate on that card handwritten - and signed by Louis - was July 28, 1881. That is consistent with his age of 19 given on the 1900 census transcribed toward the end of this email. I have attached the 1910 census record for Harry - did not find Harry in 1900 but he should be there since he was in this country. Richard may already have it. Below are the most important facts from the 1910 census in case the doc is too large for you to print and it will be difficult to read. The 1910 census record for Harry Olin shows several interesting things. Harry was married twice. He married his second wife, Annie, c 1887 so she was not the mother of Louis b. 1881 or 1883. Harry had 6 children by Annie, but only 3 are living in 1910 and those 3 are obviously living with her in 1910. -------------------------------------- 1910 United States Federal Census Household Members: Harry Olen age 60 b. about 1850 Russia, both parents b. Russia, married to WIFE #2 for 23 years, immigrated 1890, Retail Merchant Clothing, naturalized citizen wife Annie Olen age 47 b. Russia, Married once for 23 years, Imm. 1890 dau Fannie Olen age 19 b. IL son Morris Olen age 17 b. c 1892 Missouri son Isaac Olen age 15 b. IL ----------------------------- Notice that Harry Olin's son Morris was b. in Missouri, so Harry was in MO about 1892 and obviously Louis was with him and stayed in St. Louis, MO thru the 1900 census which I sent to you earlier and you were unable to print. The pertinent information from it is below. Notice in the 1900 census - transcribed below - that Louis is single and living with his "brother-in- law" Harry Goldman, which means that Louis and Harry's wife Annie are probably siblings. (The only other way for them to be brother-in-laws is if Louis has a brother married to Harry Goldman's sister.) Hilda is also shown to be their sister so we that Louis and Hilda are sisters. Notice also that Annie Goldman named her first daughter "Elsie". Louis also named his only daughter "Elsie". This supports that Louis and Annie Goldman are siblings and leads one to think that Elsie was their mother's name. The fact that Louis and Hilda are by Harry's first wife probably explains why they are both living with their sister - instead of their father in 1900, when he is already remarried to his second wife Annie. --------------------------- 1900 United States Federal Census St Louis Ward 4, St Louis (Independent City), Missouri City of St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri Household Members: Head of Household: Harry Goldman 28 wife: Annie Goldman 22 b. c (about) 1888 Russia, both parents b.
